CALIFORNIA CHESS CLUBS, VENUES, AND ORGANIZATIONS

by Kerry Lawless

It is my conviction that my generation owes future generations as accurate a history of California chess as possible. I encourage anyone who can to add to our body of knowledge to do so! The difference between a club and a venue is not great. A club can become a venue if it loses its leadership. A venue can become a club if it gets leadership.

Definitions:

Club = A place where players gather to play organized chess.
Venue = A place where players gather to play casual chess.
Organization = A group of chess clubs or players in close proximity tied together by chess matches or tournaments.
