Sunday the Mechanics' hosted the 2nd Ray Schutt Memorial Blitz which was won by Melik who scored 8.5 from 10 to win the $300 first prize. WIM Batchimeg Tuvshintugs was second at 8 for $200 followed by Expert Ray Salvatierra who was third at 7.5, good for $100. Tying for fourth with 7 points in the 34 player five double round Swiss were SM Greg Kotliar, FM Ron Cusi, NM Dennis Fritzinger and Expert Victor Ossipov.

World Under 12 Champion Daniel Naroditsky turned in a score of 16-0 in a fund raising simul held Sunday, May 4th, at the Crystal Springs Uplands school in Hillsborough.

Good luck to Mechanics' members IMs David Pruess and Josh Friedel, WIM Batcimeg Tuvshintugs and NM Sam Shankland in the US Championship which starts May 13 and runs through the 21st. The games will be shown live by Monroi (http://monroi.com). Many thanks to International Arbiter Frank Kim Berry of Stillwater, Oklahoma, for sponsoring the US and US Womens Championship for the second consecutive year.

The 2008 Fantasy Chess Competition, run by Chess Life Online, is now open for registration. Contestants enter 7-player teams (that must have a rating average of 2555 or below) from the Frank Berry U.S. Championship roster, and compete for prizes such as Monroi PCMs and extensions to their USCF memberships. Longtime MI member Henry van Bergen died January 7 of a heart attack in Glen Ellen, California. The native of the Netherlands, who was 89 at his passing, carried a Master rating for much of his career and defeated Boris Spassky in a simul in the early 1980's during one of the Paul Masson tournaments.

Susan Polgar will be visiting Fresno this fall. She will give simuls on October 24th and 25th at $50 a board. All 60 boards for the first exhibition are booked but space is still available for the second which has no board restriction. Go to http://fresnochessclub.com for more information.

IM Larry Kaufman won the 2008 US Senior Open in Boca Raton, Florida, last weekend with a perfect score, defeating fellow IM Igor Foygel in the last round. In addition to the title and prize money Kaufman won a spot in the US Championship and is the official US entry for the World Senior Championship this fall.

The New England Masters 2008 is a 9 round FIDE Swiss with good GM and IM norm opportunities that will take place near Providence, Rhode Island, USA from August 11-15, 2008.

The Masters event is part of the Blackstone Chess Festival which also includes the Blackstone Open which will take place at the same venue from August 16-17, 2008. All GMs and IMs receive a free entry into this tournament while other Masters participants receive a reduced rate on their entry fee. Most of the prizes in the Open section are guaranteed!
