Mechanics' Institute Chess Room Newsletter 496

His hand knows on which square to place every piece, and he does not need to calculate anything with his head.

1) Mechanics' Institute Chess Club News

Blitz Expert Jorge Lopez, who is royalty at the corner of 5th and Market where players gather daily to play five minute chess on the sidewalk, is off to a great start in the Summer Tuesday Night Marathon. Last night Lopez, playing in only his second rated tournament since 1994, defeated NM Romy Fuentes to remain the only perfect score after three rounds. IM Mikhail Baturin, FM Frank Thornally and NM Oleg Shaknazarov are among those on 2.5 in the 54-player field. It's still not to late to enter the eight round event with half point byes for the first three rounds.

FM Eric Schiller, a longtime friend of the Mechanics', is hospitalized at San Mateo Medical Center (Nurse 1A) and would love to have visitors. Call him first at (650) 867-0386.

GM Jesse Kraai gave a well-attended lecture at the Mechanics' last night in which he discussed the recent US Championship and showed his win over Jaan Ehlvest.

Wednesday Night Blitz results for June 2.

1. Jules Jelinek 8.5/10
2. Jorge Lopez 6
=3-4. Joe Russell and George Sanguinetti 5.5 (Russell won playoff 1.5-.5)

Chess problem solving and composing have a long tradition at the Mechanics' Institute dating back to the great A.J. Fink. National Master, author and former M.I. Trustee Bob Burger has kept up the tradition for over half a century and shows no sign of slowing done. He writes about his latest event:

"In April, the annual World Problem Solving Championship was held in England. The British team (of four) came first, ahead of Ukraine, Poland, etc. The individual champion was John Nunn, whom you may remember as a participant in one of the 1990s MI tournaments (as I remember, Korchnoi won that one). Traditionally, there is a composing tournament simultaneous with the solving championship: a theme is announced a month before the event, and composers worldwide are to submit entries within a month. In this case, there were 49 entries, including most of the world's best composers. As it so happens, I won first prize ex aequo with Marjan Kovacevic. (He's undoubtedly the best two-move composer of the last decade."

2) FIDE Elections

The upcoming FIDE election pitting Kirsan Ilyumzhinov against Anatoly Karpov is attracting a lot of attention as is their battle for the endorsement of the Russian Chess Federation. A somewhat similar national division has occurred in the United States where the US Chess Federation endorsed Karpov earlier this year but the US Zonal President Beatriz Marinelo is on the ticket of Ilyumzhinov. Marinelo, who was handpicked for the Zonal President job by then USCF President Bill Goichberg in 2009, has been nominated for the position of Vice President.

The Kirsan slate is:

The President: Kirsan Ilyumzhinov
President of Kalmykian Republic
FIDE President since 1995

Deputy President: Georgios Makropoulos
President of Greek Chess Federation
FIDE Deputy President since 1996

General Secretary: Ignatius Leong
President of Singapore Chess Federation
FIDE General Secretary since 2005

Treasurer: Nigel Freeman
President of Bermuda Chess Federation
FIDE Treasurer since 2006

Vice-President: Beatriz Marinello
Former President of the US Chess Federation
Member of FIDE Verification Commission since 2006

Vice-President: Lewis Ncube
Former President of Zambia Chess Federation
FIDE Vice-President since 2006

4) 2010 London Chess Classic

Viswanathan Anand will become the first reigning world chess champion to play in a major tournament in London since Anatoly Karpov in 1984 when he joins the eight-player field for the second London Chess Classic, which runs from 8-15 December 2010 at the Olympia Conference Centre.

Vishy Anand is the one change from the stellar field which brought spectators flocking to London to watch elite chess in December 2009. The great Indian player, who will turn 41 during the tournament, recently retained his title as the undisputed champion of the world by defeating Veselin Topalov in the latter’s home city of Sofia, Bulgaria. In London he will meet his immediate predecessor as champion, Vladimir Kramnik, 36, of Russia, and also the young man who is currently riding high as the world’s highest rated player and widely tipped to be Anand’s next challenger – Magnus Carlsen of Norway, who will be 20 by the time the tournament starts.

Jack Peters writes,

Here is a review of a new movie with a chess theme. We'll probably never get to see it, because it's from India. The main character's name is Anand.
