No. 3, March 1948 (Newell Banks gave a Simultaneous Exhibition of chess and checkers at the SF Golden Gate YMCA on 24 boards; chess 13 wins - 2 draws - 1 loss, checkers 7 wins - 2 draws. Ty Cobb obtained a draw in one of the checker games. George Koltanowski gave a Simultaneous Exhibition at the Fresno CC on March 1, 1948 and won all 19 games. Sven Almgren and Herman Steiner came in 1st and 2nd in the finals of the LA Sixth District Regional Elimination, 1948 US Chess Federation Championship; they both are designated to play in the next US Championship. The Mechanics' Institute Library Constition was amended to include, "There shall be a chess and checker room."; thus preserving the chess room for future generations. The Palo Alto CC and the Hayward Mates CC played a match, which Hayward won by a score of 2.5-4.5.)
