CALIFORNIA CHESS PERIODICALS

by Kerry Lawless

While there are many chess collectors who specialize in magazines, bulletins, and newsletters, very few specialize in periodicals from a particular geographical region. For those who do, the history related to the publications is a major reward. But most regional chess periodicals have a very small print run. That, coupled with the fact that such periodicals are commonly thrown out within a year, means that they must find a home with a 'packrat' or collector in order to survive their first decade. Even then, they aren't always safe. When the collector dies, and the issues are offered to some local bookstore, the magazines are usually refused (unless they are bound), after which they are generally discarded, lost forever. All in all, that means that regional magazines and their collectors lead a rough life. This is unfortunate, since chess periodicals, even more than chess columns, represent one of the best forums for local chess history. It is my conviction that my generation owes future generations as accurate a history of California chess as possible. I encourage anyone who can to add to our body of knowledge to do so!

A famous person once said that it takes a village to write an article on chess magazines...or something like that. In any case, I would like to thank Leighton Allen, Andy Ansel, Gordon Barrett, Alan Benson, John Blackstone, Roger E. Blaine, John Hillery, Jim Hurt, Richard 'S' Lee, Thomas F. Maser, John P. McCumiskey, Martin E. Morrison, Calvin Olson, Erik Osbun, Jack Peters, Hans Poschmann, Richard Shorman, and Ted Yudacufski. Special thanks go to Mechanics' Institute Chess Room Director John Donaldson.

California chess periodicals can be divided into three periods: the pre-WW2 (1850 through 1945), the post-WW2 (1946 through 1971), and the Robert Fischer boom and post-Fischer boom (1972 to the present).

The pre-WW2 period is largely unknown. The Western American Chess and Checker Bulletin, The Chess Reporter, the Capital City Chess Club Bulletin, and the Western Chess Chronicles are the only pre-WW2 periodicals that our local California chess historians know about. Undoubtedly, more are waiting to be found. Besides the many clubs and organizations that could have published newsletters or bulletins during California's first century, there are two events that could have brought out magazines: former (unofficial) World Champion Pierre Charles Fournie De Saint-Amant came to San Francisco as the French Consul in 1851; and Paul Morphy won the (unofficial) world championship from Professor Adolf Anderssen in 1858 and sparked chess interest to Fischer-like levels. The post-WW2 period was characterized by change...both in ratings and titles. Each league and club had its own rating system, which was reflected in their periodicals. It wasn't until Fischer won the world championship that the USCF rating became the only rating system for non-professional players. After the Bobby Fischer match for the world chess championship, chess interest caused the number of monthly periodicals to increase. Unfortunately, the Fischer boom is long gone. That, coupled with increasingly online-only publications, is causing a dip in the number of California chess periodicals.

WESTERN AMERICAN CHESS AND CHECKER BULLETIN (1919)
(Published in SF)

Editor: C. C. Kanaga (SF 1919)

In the July-August 1919 issue of the American Chess Bulletin, Herman Helms wrote, "The Western American Chess and Checker Bulletin, edited and published by Professor C.C. Kanaga of 515 Jones street, San Francisco, Cal., has evidently been discontinued, but unfortunately without any explanation from the publisher, who brought out No. 3, under date of February 5, 1919, the last issue to make its appearance. It had been planned as a fortnightly at a subscription of $2.50 a year and, according to a printed statement on the front cover, had a guaranteed circulation of 1,000 copies per issue... From a reliable source we learn that No. 4 of the hapless publication was ready for the press, but got no farther..." Issues 1-3 are in the John G. White Collection at the Cleveland Public Library.
